An early introduction to algebraic thinking – these sums ask children to derive the relationship between pairs of numbers. The rules are simple for a child to understand. The right hand side numbers are related to the left hand side numbers. Observe the three pairs of numbers carefully and find the relationship. Use the same relationship to find the right-hand side number of the fourth pair. Finding the relationships requires ability to recognize patterns and spot algebraic relationships between numbers. Deriving the fourth number based on that relationship requires mental math skills.
